Table 4 Example coding diagram for participant artifacts

From: Computational thinking through the lens of biological evolution learning: enhancing understanding through the levels of biological organization and computational complexity

Biological words student uses to identify biological level(s)

Which biological levels (1–14) and accuracy

How many properly identified level(s), supporting explanation present

How many connection attempts made between levels?

How many levels between these attempts?

Was correct connection made between levels?

Other Notes

List all biological levels 1–14 (even if students do not use all levels)

List the words that student participants use to represent biological levels within their artifacts

For each level identified specify the accuracy

Identify how many levels and the presence of an explanation and or proper use of term/s

Identify how many connections were made between levels and use arrows to connect levels

Identify how many levels were between each connection attempt

Identify the accuracy of the level connections

List notes about connections within student artifact

  1. The instruments used had 14 rows, one for each biological level
